The Rolex Explorer II Ref. 1655, also known as the “Steve McQueen” or “Freccione”, is one of Rolex’s most iconic vintage sports watches. Introduced in 1971, it was designed for explorers and researchers working in dark environments without natural daylight. The distinctive 24-hour bezel served as a day/night indicator, allowing the wearer to distinguish between day and night when natural light was unavailable.
This example dates to 1971 and features a 2-million serial number, an original Mark I bezel, as well as Rolex tritium service dial and hands. The date disc has also been replaced. While the service parts mean the watch is no longer in completely original configuration, they provide an attractive combination of vintage character and an excellent condition of the dial and hands.
The caseback is stamped “II 71”, perfectly matching the production period of the watch. The case has been polished in the past and shows no dents or significant damage. The lugs have consequently lost some material, but remain in very good condition considering the watch’s age.
The Rolex Oyster bracelet dates from 1993 and was replaced at that time. In spring 2026, the watch received a checkup and polishing by a watchmaker in Munich. Proof of this is available. In addition, there is a purchase receipt from a Dutch vintage watch dealer dated 2018. Inside beats the proven Rolex Caliber 1570.
